Intent

At Leyland St James Primary School, our intent for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is designed to help pupils develop essential life skills and knowledge. Our curriculum covers key topics such as emotional well-being, healthy lifestyles, relationships, and safety. By engaging in discussions, role-playing, and interactive activities, our children will learn to navigate social situations, making informed choices, and understand the importance of physical and mental health. Through our PSHE curriculum, we strive to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development through engaging and inclusive content, enabling them to make appropriate choices as they navigate a rich, varied, often complex and ever-evolving life in modern Britain - and the world. Our curriculum aims to create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where our children can build confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility. A core component of our curriculum includes Relationships, Sex and Health Education, meeting statutory requirements and taking a preventative approach to prepare children for adolescence and adulthood.

Implementation

The school’s PSHE provision supports the school’s aims of developing confident citizens and successful and resilient learners who are creative, resourceful and able to identify and solve problems. The social and emotional development of pupils is embedded throughout the entire school’s curriculum and culture. We help our pupils understand and manage their feelings, build resilience and be independent, curious problem solvers.

At Leyland St James’ we use SCARF, a comprehensive scheme of work for PSHE and Wellbeing education which is designed to cover all aspects of PSHE, including RSHE, in a spiral curriculum.

The SCARF curriculum is based on five values which provide a basis for children’s health, their emotional well-being and their achievement:

Safety

Caring

Achievement

Resilience

Friendship

The Early Years Foundation Stage

SCARF Early Years form part of the spiral curriculum that provides the essential building blocks needed to meet the DfE's Relationships Education and Health Education requirements.

KS1 and KS2

The SCARF programme divides the year into 6 themed units:

Autumn 1: Me and My Relationships: includes content on feelings, emotions, conflict resolution and friendships;

Autumn 2: Valuing Difference: a focus on respectful relationships and British values;

Spring 1: Keeping Safe: looking at keeping ourselves healthy and safe

Spring 2: Rights and Respect: learning about money, living in the wider world and the environment;

Summer 1: Being My Best: developing skills in keeping healthy, developing a growth mindset (resilience), goal-setting and achievement;

Summer 2: Growing and Changing: finding out about the human body, the changes that take place from birth to old age and being safe.

Impact

Our PSHE curriculum reflects the needs of our pupils, supports the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical develop of our pupils and promotes British values. It aims to provide children with the knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

By the time our children leave our school they will:

  • be able to approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life;
  • be on their way to becoming healthy, open minded, respectful, socially and morally responsible, active members of society;
  • appreciate difference and diversity;
  • recognise and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty;
  • be  able to understand and manage their emotions;
  • be able to look after their mental health and well-being;
  • be able to develop positive, healthy relationships with their peers both now and in the future;
  • understand the physical aspects involved in RSE at an age appropriate level;
  • have respect for themselves and others;
  • have a positive self-esteem.
